The belief is the spirit ("anito") of the departed stays with the body but gets to sit and watch over the land and it's people. Long before they die, the influential people get to choose the spot where they will rest for the rest of time. Thus, cliffs get to be the choice spots since their bodies will be safe from animals and the view is superb.
